A GUARDIAN IS RARELY ALONE · SEASON 04

The people
beside me.

A novel gives me a companion. Pictures give me attendants. A family claim gives me trouble. I intend to meet each one at the right distance.

A word before we begin

People have put many figures beside me. A name in a novel is not a person in a census; a painted attendant is not automatically a colleague; a repeated label is not a family tree. This season keeps those differences in view.

Source compass

  1. Tang Zhong Kui quan zhuan (唐钟馗全传) — a Ming literary narrative that gives Zhong Kui a named companion, Wen Zheng. It is a story-world relation, not proof of a Tang-era acquaintance.
  2. The relation atlas — this site’s source ledger, which marks literary, visual, ritual, and contested connections separately.
