The job that
sent me back.

Once the underworld inspection is finished, the novel gathers Zhong Kui's family for a reunion in heaven. It is a brief pause after the courts, the registers, and the errors. Then the Jade Emperor gives the story its next task: the world has demons, the living need help, and an inspector is to become a marshal.

The title is generous—“Marshal who governs yin and yang and subdues demons”—but the object in his hand is less grand: an iron tally, alongside the familiar sword. The pairing matters. The sword is force. The tally is authority, a sign that an order has been issued and must be carried out. This book wants its hero to have both.

He returns to Zhongnan, the place he had earlier used as retreat. The old mountain is no longer simply a place where a disappointed scholar studies. It becomes the edge between offices above, courts below, and people on the ground. The novel then sends its newly appointed figure into a string of confrontations: mountain spirits, a small demon, a bat, and later human grievances that require testimony.

The book does not give me freedom. It gives me a mandate.

That distinction is useful. A modern adaptation may show Zhong Kui as an independent hunter. The Ming novel is more bureaucratic and stranger: he is a delegated official. The adventures are not random encounters. They are the work attached to an appointment.

We should still resist saying this is the origin of every Zhong Kui image with a sword. The artwork and ritual history are wider than this one book. But for this serial, it is the moment that makes the next chapters cohere. The student has become an examiner; the examiner has become a commissioner; the commissioner is sent home with a job.

The next episode reaches the most famous scene in the whole tradition: a ruler's dream, a smaller demon called Xūhào, and a picture that is asked to travel farther than the dream itself.
