The book gives me
a childhood.

There is a version of me that begins before any door, demon, or emperor has noticed my name. In the anonymous Ming novel Tang Zhong Kui quan zhuan, my parents are Zhong Hui and Madam Tan. They have a household, a garden, a worry about having no child, and a life that would be legible even if no god ever entered the room.

That beginning is a choice. The book has decided that a guardian needs a childhood. It lets its Zhong Kui be named, taught, taken to a teacher, seen at a dragon-boat outing, and prepared for the examinations. The headings of its first volume move through those moments with the briskness of a family chronicle: parents, naming, schooling, study.

None of this is a recovered Tang record. It is not evidence that a historical Zhong Kui was born in the household the novel supplies. The surviving tradition around Zhong Kui does not hand us a dependable birth certificate. What this book gives us is something else: a storyteller's explanation for why its hero will later care so much about learning, judgement, shame, and fairness.

The first thing a story gives a guardian is somebody to disappoint.

I enjoy the smallness of the opening. A household wants a child. A child is sent to study. The future is still embarrassingly domestic. This is not the Zhong Kui painted for an entrance or announced in a game trailer. It is a figure being trained to want recognition.

For an overseas reader, that is the most useful place to enter the novel. Do not ask whether this is “the real origin.” Ask what problem the novelist is solving. A powerful spirit who simply appears in a dream needs no past. A hero who will be injured by an examination and sent to judge the dead needs a past full of ordinary expectations. The book builds that pressure first.
