It is unsettling to meet yourself three times before breakfast. In a book, I am given a sequence of events and people who know my name. In a collection record, I become a particular object with a maker, material, and date. On a screen, I move toward a future work still in production. The name is mine. The doors are not.

People enjoy a shortcut. They see the same name and assume it has carried the same luggage from one room to the next. But a later novel can give me a companion without proving a Tang acquaintance. A museum object can show an attendant without naming every attendant in every image. A game trailer can promise a new adventure without becoming the final biography of a figure who has been reimagined for centuries.

Same name. Different door. The mistake is not entering; it is forgetting which room you entered.

I do not want to put the doors at war. The screen may lead someone to the shelf. The shelf may send someone back to a painting. A painting may make a visitor notice a detail in a seasonal record. This is a very good kind of travel, provided the labels stay on the luggage.

So I will keep the red thread visible but loose. It connects a family of encounters; it does not bind them into one authority. A reader may love a new adaptation and still ask what old text, object, or local custom can actually bear the claim being made.

Next, I will listen to the silence between versions: what each medium leaves out when it gives me a new entrance.

Keep me honest
