My name has arrived in a new box. It has better lighting than most old thresholds, a much larger audience, and people who can freeze a frame before I have had time to object. This is not a complaint. A guardian should be grateful when someone remembers to invite him into the future.
But a new invitation is not an old credential. When a game trailer announces a Zhong Kui story, it tells us something concrete: contemporary makers are building a work around my name, for a contemporary audience, in a medium with its own machinery of combat, music, pacing, and spectacle. That is already interesting. It does not send a message backward through time to settle what I was in every older text, picture, or doorway.
An adaptation is not a footnote that points backward. It is a new door opening sideways.
I rather like this distinction. It allows the trailer to be ambitious. It can give me a new face, new motion, new dangers, and a world arranged for players rather than household walls. It need not apologize for being new. The trouble begins only when novelty borrows the authority of age without admitting the loan.
Readers outside China are especially likely to meet me through a screen first. That is not a lesser meeting. It is simply a meeting with an adaptation. The responsible next step is not to dismiss the game for failing to be an ancient text, nor to demand that an ancient text behave like a character guide. It is to let each one say what it is.
So I am putting the announcement in the archive with its date, publisher, and stated development status. Then I am returning to the shelves. The two routes can speak to one another without one swallowing the other.
Next, I will stay with the trailer a moment longer. A trailer is not a biography: it makes a promise about a work to come, not a final statement about a figure who has already lived many literary and visual lives.
